Despotism on film: Unconstitutional Officer Auldridge outside the Farmers Market
by Andreas Nicholas
Tuesday Feb 12th, 2008 3:00 PM
I was just walking by the farmers market. I hadn't actually been there even the required time necessary for a citation, but this is when they first started harassing people. At one point he explains to me that if the police have reason you you must comply, however never saying he had any...

When I said to him, "...do you think you can stop people from gathering in public places?"

he replies, "We're working on it"

Here is an online petition against this law , started a few days ago. The comments of the people signing are interesting and important. Please take a moment and sign this petition. Thanks for the great video.

There is a law for everything that can happen in a parking lot. This is the most obvious unconstitutional grab of rights Santa Cruz has taken in a long time. It is a repressive law.

Its also a huge waste of resources money and time. Real crimes are happening while the officers, film, harass and warn people of this law. In numbers they cannot stop us. Don't let them put a 15 time limit on public property we all collectively own. People are against this law when they understand it. Take the time to explain it to folks, and have them call our fine mayor who is largely responsible for the new ordnance.

If you remove a right from one class of citizen, you remove it from all.

This means no napping or reading in your car, no resting while your other half shops, no sleeping off too much to drink. No associating with others on land we all collectively own. This stifles free speech and assembly rights and is unconstitutional in nature.

These types of laws lead to "No speech zones" with small inadequate "Free Speech Zones" nearby -- in a Country where Free Speech is supposed to be a basic right human right we all equally share.

To any "officer of the peace" who happens to read this:

REMEMBER THE CONSTITUTION AND THE BILL OF RIGHTS!

Here's a quick refresher...

The first amendment reads: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Drop this us and them mentality, dear officer. You are us and we are you, and we are here to protect each other. We are the community you are supposed to protect.
